I was always wondering how I couldn't ever get the animation to occur. Apparently you have to manually lower what's in the left hand before attacking. There is basically a small window of opportunity to backstab. The more you pull it off the easy it will become. Try dropping your shield and circling the enemy up close, it is easier to get Oh, btw.. Most mobs, usually the big ones, right after you backstab them and they get up, will immediately turn to where you were standing, if you take advantage of this and move around in front of them, you should be able to backstab again instantly. A good place to practice backstabs is on the Black Knights in Anor Londo. Lock on, circle their weapon side, and attempt to backstab. Once you practice on these guys, you'll notice the window for a backstab isn't really to be directly behind them, but kind of behind their shoulder. #2. DS2 actually gave daggers it's own little niche in pvp. But yeah if you want to one-shot things after a parry, use high AR weapons. Basically traditional 2 handers. Rapier/Estoc is good for 1v1 but for invasions it's really lackluster. The riposte will most likely not kill any host. And if you don't one-shot people, they easily roll away and I believe the Dark Silver Tracer has the highest crit value in the game with the Bandit Knife being second highest. Well, highest riposte/backstab damage is gonna be different than highest critical damage. And weapons like Estoc and Rapier have hidden critical modifiers as well. Highest damage is gonna be like, a crystal/buffed demon hammer, or Midroll is viable if you use it conservatively, but fat rolling makes you a prime target for backstabbing, If you're gonna fat roll then consider equiping a piece of the armor of thorns set to hopefully cancel out their backstab or carry a fast weapon, preferably with wide horizontal attacks.
